The Murray Hill neighborhood in New York City, New York, is a lively and Historic area where residents can enjoy the vibrant nightlife and historical charm. It is located on the east side of Manhattan and has the East River or Kips Bay on the east side of it and Midtown Manhattan on the west side of it. The border to the south is 34th Street, and the border to the north is 42nd Street.

The name comes from Robert Murray, a merchant, and his family, who relocated from Pennsylvania to Manhattan in 1753 and made their home on a hill where what is now Park Avenue and 37th Street. This became known as Murray Hill. He, also, had a wharf next to Wall Street where he had his importing business.

Well-known people who have lived in Murray Hill include Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, J.P. Morgan, Katherine Hepburn, Tennessee Williams, Cole Porter, Ayn Rand, and Alfred G. Vanderbilt. Many diplomats live here because of the consulates within this neighborhood and its nearness to the United Nations Headquarters.

Historic Architectural Neighborhood

West of Third Avenue on the tree-lined side streets, there are Victorian brownstones, Federal-style row houses, Old New York-style mansions, and 19th-century converted carriage houses and stables. The Murray Hill neighborhood has a Historic district between 35th and 38th Streets. Many buildings are National Historic Landmarks.

There are high-rise residential buildings on Murray Hill’s southeastern area, near 34th Street. The neighborhood, also, has many churches that have stained glass and interesting architecture. From Murray Hill, a resident can see the American Copper Building, which is two crooked-looking buildings connected with a three-story skybridge, the Chrysler Building, and the Empire State Building.

Restaurants, Night Life, Local Shops, & Businesses

Murray Hill is well-known for lively bars after work for happy hour and revelry on the avenues and the residents can go to the cocktail lounges and restaurants on the side streets for a more relaxed atmosphere. It has a mix of fine dining restaurants, including two with Michelin stars.

There is a group of authentic Indian restaurants in an area called Little India in the areas of Lexington Avenue and 28th Street. You can sample the cuisine and find Indian clothing and groceries within this area.

It has a wide range of services for residents, such as delis, dry cleaners, and shoe repair shops. You could go to the Blink gym in the Murray Hill neighborhood for your fitness time.
