Recreational vehicle or RV is the general term used to describe the different types of vehicles used to explore outdoor locations. Anyone familiar with outdoor camping knows that there are different types of vehicles designed specifically for this purpose.
Motorhomes, Campervans, Caravans, and Camper Trailers are some of the most notable forms of recreational vehicles outdoor adventurers can choose from. They differ significantly in terms of their overall design, cost, space, and amenities. So, how do you determine the right one for you? This post is a quick comparison between the different types of recreational vehicles that will make it easier to identify them.
Motorhomes
As the name suggests, a motorhome is essentially a home on wheels. This type of RV is typically built on the chassis of a bus or truck, with a cab up front separate from the living area. A motorhome is designed to serve as a self-contained living quarters, complete with “rooms” or extra amenities like bedrooms, kitchen, and bathrooms.
The most luxurious motorhomes may also have additional features such as entertainment systems, refrigerators, dishwashers, security systems, and so on. A motorhome offers the ultimate RV experience, allowing you to travel in style and comfort.
Campervans
The campervan is the less luxurious version of the motorhome. It offers the basic amenities for cooking, sleeping, and washing but is less spacious and less luxurious compared to motorhomes. While a motorhome can house up to 6 people, campervans mostly accommodate 2 or 3 people on average.
There’s often no divide between the driving cab and the living area. This means you can easily move between the living quarters and the driving cab without getting out of the vehicle. While they offer less space, the compact size of camper vans means they’re easy to maneuver and pack compared to motorhomes.
Caravans
A caravan is sometimes referred to as a trailer or mobile home. It is a separate living space typically towed behind a truck or any other suitable vehicle. This living space may have separate living areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, and full kitchen facilities.
They come in various sizes, but caravans are often smaller than campervans and motorhomes, with limited facilities. Also, the fact that it’s towed behind your vehicles means you might need to do some setup when you get to your camping spot, such as hooking up the unit to electricity or waste facilities on the site.
The biggest downside of caravans is how difficult to tow and maneuver they can be. Most people have a hard time moving through traffic with a caravan in tow, and parking the vehicle may be complicated too.
Camper Trailer
The camper trailer is one of the simplest recreational vehicle options. It consists of a tent that folds in and out of a trailer. It is often smaller than a caravan but still offers basic amenities like a sink and cooking area. There is often no shower area or bathroom, but this can be fitted outside the trailer. The lightweight nature of this type of RV and its lower cost makes it particularly appealing to adventurers who value simplicity over luxury.
